SEMINAR ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Participating in the inauguration of the TAIEX Seminar titled “Violence against Women and Domestic Violence” held in Trabzon, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis stated that it was the challenging spirit of women which would establish a country and which would provide its sustainability.
Egemen Bagis stated these:
“There is a subject which we shouldn’t forget. We call these lands as ‘Anadolu’. In these lands the mothers and the women always had a special place. We should never forget the discipline of the khans who governed us with their wifes throughout the history and the sultans who always dignified their mothers, wives and sisters and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk who has granted the right to vote and the right to stand for election with the decleration of the Turkish Republic. With the solidarity and collaboration of men and women, we can carry Turkey among the 10 most powerful economies of the world.”
Reminding that the rights of women were guaranteed by constitutional assurance since 2010, Bagis said: “As of 14 March 2012, Turkey signed The European Council Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.”
Stating that they all worked together in Turkey in the preparation of the new constitution and in the preparation of some laws and adding that enacting laws is not enough alone, Bagis stated these:
“It is the most important of all to understand the mentality of this issue. Everyone should understand the core of the laws and should explain them to the others. At this point, we all have responsibilities. As the grandsons and granddaughters of an ancestor, who defended the opinion ‘dignify a person, so that a state would be dignified spontaneously’, we can not ignore the women.”
