BAGIS RECEIVES EP WOMEN’S RIGHTS COMMITTEE

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis hosted members of the European Parliament Women Rights and Gender Equality Committee in Ankara.

Bagis indicated that the meeting was held due to the preparatory work for “A Perspective 2020 for Women in Turkey” report of Emine Bozkurt, who also participated in the committee. Bagis said that the reports Emine Bozkurt prepared in 2005 and 2007 on women right’s in Turkey shed light on them and that the recent report would also be a guide in this respect.

Bagis pointed out that a joint usage of the common areas was required to attain gender equity rather than creating different areas for women and men in the society and that they tried to attain gender equity in the last 9 years through revolutionary reforms. Bagis indicated that Turkish culture implied the understanding of “paradise lies at the feet of the mother”.

Bagis talked about the development process of women’s right in Turkey and said “Are we happy with the current situation? No we are not. We are determined to improve it through our steps of EU standards.”
