A MINI SUMMIT WITH THE MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION
“A quartet summit” was held in Ankara with the participation of Mr. Egemen Bagis, the Minister of EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator, Mr. Taner Yildiz, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Mr. Stefan Fule, the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy and Mr. Gunther Oettinger, the Commissioner for Energy.
Prior to the meeting, Bagis met with the guests in a meal and reminded that they started a new process. Bagis said: “Today, we have held a quartet meeting with the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy and the Commissioner for Energy with the great contributions of Mr. Taner Yildiz, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Considering that we started the day by having breakfast with the Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Responses in Ankara, today, we are in fact hosting about 12 percent of the European Commission in Turkey”.
Mentioning that representatives of 3 out of 27 EU member states were in Turkey, Bagis remarked that it was an important event in realizing the dimension of the relations between Turkey and the EU.
Minister Bagis continued his speech as follows:
“The relations between Turkey and the EU are still going on quite extensively in its 52th year. We were able to discuss the technical details of the issue in the meeting. Minister Yildiz made the necessary statements on the issue so that our colleagues in the EU could understand Turkey’s energy policies very clearly. We listened to our guests and had the chance to notice their sensitivities. We all agreed that it was of prime important for both Turkey and Europe to open the energy chapter, which is one of the chapters on negotiation. Our guests also hope that this chapter will open for negotiations like us. However, there exist some political obstacles. In spite of these obstacles, we are determined to continue our work in order to integrate Turkey with Europe on a maximum level in terms of energy. Within this respect, our work will continue”.
