    OUR DEMOCRACY IS STRONGER

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis attended the District Congress of AK Party in Silivri and delivered a speech there. Bagis said that freedoms which could not even be articulated in the past are fully enjoyed today. Bagis continued as follows:
“Our democracy has gained strength. The standards and prestige of Turkish democracy have increased. Thank God, the denial policies have come to an end. Evacuation of villages, murders by unknown assailants and torture are not among the defects of this country anymore. Compared to the past, Turkey is a much more democratic, transparent and respected country today. Above all, Turkey is more sure of its future.
Silivri case put a stamp on the history of democracy in Turkey. The process in Silivri still continues and it is closely followed by everybody in Turkey. We, the members of AK Party, believe that every person is innocent until proven guilty; we respect the presumption of innocence. However, we also believe that the judiciary should carry out its own duty as an independent power.”
Speaking about the draft law adopted in the French Parliament, Bagis said:
“It will be put on the agenda of the Senate now. In the period when that issue was being discussed we asked France not to forget its own acts in Morocco, Algeria and Somalia. Yesterday the prime minister of Algeria made a statement about this issue and said “don’t include us into that issue” Dear friends, this is called ‘the Stockholm Syndrome’ in psychology. Thank God, one of the leading parties in Algeria censured their own prime minister. Turkey today has attained a different status in the world.
Today Turkey not only to gives voice to its own truth but also becomes a source of inspiration for other politicians in different countries to tell the truth. The democratization, transparency and the respectability of Turkey is at such a point which is so important not only for us, for our citizens but also for the entire world. So, we will not fall into that trap of some exploitive politicians in France”
