REMEMBERING MEHMET AKIF ERSOY
Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis delivered a written message on the occasion of the 75th death anniversary of our national poet Mehmet Akif Ersoy.
In his message Egemen Bagis indicated the followings:
“Mehmet Akif Ersoy, the poet of our national anthem was not only a powerful poet, but also an important figure in our fight for liberty and freedom.
Defending our historical values and identity, Mehmet Akif has stimulated our national spirit through his magnificent lines.
Akif was aware that this nation couldn’t continue to exist if it denied its common identity and soul.
With his saying: “I hope God doesn’t let anyone to write a second national anthem to us”, Akif attached importance maintaining the liberty and freedom that has been achieved.
Moreover today, Akif’s fight against fanaticism guides us through our European Union journey.
The works of this great poet, whom we lost 75 years ago, are still representing the thoughts and feelings of our people.
While Mehmet Akif Ersoy has presented the National Anthem to Turkish people, our people have always commemorated him with gratitude and respect.
Our people have always respected and attached importance to the beloved memory of Mehmet Akif, and have buried his corpse in the Edirnekapı Martyr’s Cemetry, as an indication of gratitude.
We have to both respect Mehmet Akif and use his thoughts as a guide and carry them to future.
We believe this is the only way to attain the power and prestige Turkey deserves and to reach the level of contemporary civilizations indicated by Ataturk.
Mehmet Akif Ersoy will always be in our hearts and will continue to shed light on our way.
I would like to once more commemorate the beloved memory of Mehmet Akif with respect and gratitude.”
