4th PRESIDENT CEMAL GÜRSEL COMMEMORATED

The 4th President Gürsel was commemorated on the 45th anniversary of his death with a ceremony at his grave in Turkish State Cemetery.

Late President's grandchildren Özdem Gürsel and Melkan Gürsel Tabanlıoğlu, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis on behalf of the government and Ankara Garrison Commander Brigadier General Kemal Korkmaz and other authorities attended the ceremony.

Minister Bagis who has attended the ceremony on behalf of the government made a short statement to the members of the press on the issue and said:

"If late Gürsel were alive today, I would be among the persons who would criticize him most severely. However, according to our values, we should commemorate our decedents with mercy. Thus, commemorating the 4th President of the Republic of Turkey on the 45th anniversary of his death by his tomb is the very nature of our big state. Herewith, I would also like to emphasize particularly that I commemorate late Menderes and his friends with mercy."
