UN GRANTS PALESTINE NON MEMBER OBSERVER STATE STATUS

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis stated that Palestine’s being granted the upgraded status of “Non-member Observer State” after the voting at UN General Assembly, was the first step in the way leading to the end of a great injustice.

Delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the project “Provinces Preparing for the European Union” which was held in Malatya, Minister Bagis emphasized that today was one of those days that must be written in bold letters to the world history and he continued, “The Palestinian people have taken the first step of being a state for the first time after 65 years through being granted by the UN General Assembly the status of non-member observer state. Our Palestinian brothers obtained the status of non-member observer state through significant diplomatic efforts of Turkey and through the clear stance taken by our Prime Minister by making direct phone calls with many leaders. At the time when the world was strongly applauding Palestine, some understood that they could not manipulate the world in an organized way.”

Stating that while everybody was standing after this resolution, there were still those who were sitting, Minister Bagis made the following evaluation: “They probably got the necessary message. Yesterday, the citizens of Turkish Republic who support the Palestinian’s bid, with all their differences, being from the ruling party or opposition, being from east or west, have seen that the first step in the way leading to the end of a really great injustice was taken. Unless an independent and a sovereign state of Palestine is founded, peace can be achieved neither in Israel, in the Middle East nor in the world. Palestinian people’s founding their own state is the most important security insurance for Israel”.

Addressing the issue of Palestine during the speech he made at the meeting titled “All Together to the Future for Lifelong Learning and Youth Programmes” held in Malatya Minister Bagis said that Palestinian people should found their own state for the peace being achieved, and added “From now on the world should consider and acknowledge this fact.”
