PUBLICITY MEETING OF TOWN-TWINNING PROGRAMME UNDER “ISTANBUL PREPARING FOR THE EU” PROJECT

Publicity Meeting of “Town-Twinning Programme” carried out within the context of Istanbul Preparing for the EU Project was held in Istanbul Trade University Eminonu campus. 

In the speech he made at the opening of the meeting, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis said that all districts of Istanbul would be an EU centre as a result of the Town-Twinning Programme.

Minister Bagis implied that all districts would be active participants of the European Union process through the town-twinning programmes, projects promoted and with the assistance of experts from the Ministry for EU Affairs who are allocated for each district.

Egemen Bagis said, “Istanbul, which is one of the important cities of Europe, is the most European City of Asia and the most Asian City of Europe”.

Describing the “prejudices” as the “biggest” hinder and problem that Turkey faces during the European Union accession process, Bagis noted that there was an image problem about Turkey in Europe, this was due to the confusing of Turkey’s conditions during the period that the first application was made to join the Community with today’s conditions and due to the problem of perception in the minds.
