    YOUNG TRANSLATORS CONTEST CEREMONY

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis gave the plaques of the winners of the second Young Translators Contest organized by the Ministry for EU Affairs.

Delivering a speech at the Ortakoy Office of the Ministry for EU Affairs, Bagis indicated that expert translators and interpreters would be needed in the future to work in the EU institutions and said “The EU needs actors speaking the language of peace, driven by the values of the EU more than ever.”

Emphasizing that a good knowledge of foreign language was not enough to correctly translate the EU acquis, Bagis said young translators had to be well equipped and educated. Indicating that Turkey’s power came from educating her own youth, Bagis said “By learning new languages our citizens expand not only their horizon, but also Turkey’s, in accordance with the old saying ‘one language, one person’”.

10 young translators who ranked in English, French and German languages in the Contest, which was organized to raise awareness of students studying at the Translation- Interpretation and Translation Studies Departments of the Universities on Turkey’s EU accession process and contribute to training of the translators who will be required in this area, will be awarded by a study visit to the EU translation units in Brussels between 22nd and 24th of March.
