EGEMEN BAGIS PARTICIPATES IN THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM HELD IN DAVOS

Speaking in Davos where the World Economic Forum is underway, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis said “We have overcome our own economic crisis by investing in democracy and I offer you to do the same”. 

Speaking at the session on "The New Context in Europe" within the scope of World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Bagis explained that the global economic crisis reshaped the deep rooted economic establishments and power balances, and said “What is more dramatic is the transformation of economic crisis into political crisis.”

Bagis exemplified that last year the elected governments in some countries such as Greece and Italy were transformed into governments composed of technocrats, and said “The big question whether the EU will overcome the global economic crisis effecting member states is a big concern in the recent days. The bigger question should be whether the EU sees the current democratic deficit as legitimate while struggling with the economic deficits. It will be a real test in the near future for the EU how to sustain the balance between democracy and economy. "

Indicating that they had made the most important investment in democracy in the last nine years, and he stated that now Turkey had been putting its imprint on the global stage with its impressive economic development and political stability.

Noting that Turkey’s significant contribution to the EU’s future could not be ignored and Bagis said “We have already proved that Turkey does not downsize the slices that the EU members get from the EU cake. On the contrary, Turkey will enlarge the size of the cake as a whole when she becomes an EU member.”
