IF HE COMES ALONE, HE WILL HAVE FISH FOR DINNER AND RETURN
Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis responded to the meeting request of the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus Dimitris Hristofyas with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the latter’s statement to the NTV, through the Turkish Cypriot daily Haberdar newspaper.
In his statement to Turkish Cypriot daily Haberdar newspaper, indicating that Hristofyas could only meet with Turkish officials at a meeting which Dervis Eroglu, the President of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus also attended, Bagis gave the message that this request could be agreed to only if there would be a quadripartite meeting involving Greek Cypriot Administration, TRNC, Turkey and Greece.
Sending also a witty message to the Greek Cypriot Leader, Bagis stated that if he came to Istanbul alone to have a meeting, this wouldn’t be possible and said “If Hristofyas comes alone, he will eat fish at a restaurant on the Bosphorus and he will return in a troubled state of mind, thinking what would be the end with Cyprus”.
Bagis said, “We would like Mr. Dervis Eroglu, the President of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to take Hristofyas along. If they came together, we would meet with him, and so would our Prime Minister”. Thus Bagis once more emphasized that Turkey would not take Greek Cypriot Administration Leader as an interlocutor if he was alone.
