BAGIS EVALUATES CROATIA’S ACCESSION AGREEMENT WITH THE EU

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis made a written statement regarding Croatia’s Accession Treaty signed with the EU. 

In his statement, Minister Bagis said:

“We would like to congratulate Croatia. Today, Croatia and the Croatian people have left a mark in history. It goes without doubt that the membership of Croatia is also highly welcomed by the Turkish people. In fact, the growing relations between Turkey and Croatia, especially through tourism, are exceptional.

Our greatest desire and aim is to make Turkey live the joy that Croatia does. We will continue decisively to pursue the reform process for our nation, regardless of the conjectural developments and the eclipse of reason that the EU passes through. In this respect, it will not be logical and reasonable to make a comparison between Turkey and Croatia.

Given the double standards that it applied to Turkey, the European Union has shown that Croatia and Turkey are not two countries negotiating under equal conditions. We wish that Turkey were faced with a negotiating framework with a defined process and whose rules do not change in the middle of the game.

Unfortunately, Turkey is faced with a bad play, unlike Croatia which has undergone a negotiation process with a concrete and clear picture. We will insist to pursue the reform process with the objective of further improving the living conditions of our nation even if the European Union does not give up this play with no audience.
