"A UNION OF PEACE SHOULD NOT HAVE BORDERS"

Leaving for Riga, the capital of Latvia, to pay official visits, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis delivered a speech on Turkey’s EU membership process.

Before his speech, in the ceremony commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the death of Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a minute of silence was observed with the participation of the Latvian students.

Explaining Turkey’s EU membership process to the students of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Latvia, Bagis stated that the EU was not only an economic and political union but also a peace process and added, “Thus a peace union should not have geographical borders. If so, this is only imaginary”. Pointing out that the EU should keep its doors open to every country which believed in democracy and peace and was ready to contribute to those values; Bagis said that the EU which was a continental peace process would be a global one after Turkey’s accession.

During his visit to Latvia, Bagis firstly met the Latvian President Andris Berzins and the Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics, and then he met Turkish citizens living in Latvia.
