EUROPEAN DAY FOR VICTIMS OF TERRORISM

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis made a written statement about the European Day for Victims of Terrorism and said that Turkey condemned all kinds of terrorism and commemorated the victims of terrorism in Europe and in the world with great respect.

In the written statement he made about the European Day for Victims of Terrorism, Bagis said that the world was shocked by terrorist attacks which first targeted New York and then Istanbul, Madrid and London in the last decade. Egemen Bagis indicated that all those bloody attacks displayed the brutal and terrifying face of terrorism to the world and proved once again that terrorism was a global threat for humanity. Bagis's statement continued as follows:

"As our Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan indicated every so often, terrorism does not have nationality, faith or language. As a nation which has always contributed to efforts made in order to ensure global peace, tranquillity and stability we believe that victims of terrorism should not be subject to any discrimination as well. I hope that Europe on the occasion of this day where it commemorates the victims of terrorism will realise that it has not provided sufficient support to Turkey which has met the terrifying face of terrorism so long ago, in its long-standing struggle against terrorism.

Every country, whether or not it is a target for terrorism, should act together against terrorism. No country should remain indifferent to terrorism. Discrimination can be made neither among terrorists nor among victims of terrorism.

On the occasion of this day where the victims of Madrid attacks are commemorated we also remember our citizens who lost their lives in terrorist attacks and other victims of terrorism in Pakistan, New York, London, Iraq and in different regions of the world."

March 11 was declared the European Day for Victims of Terrorism after 191 people from 17 different nations had lost their lives in Madrid bomb attacks on March 11, 2003.
