THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY RESISTS CHANGE
Making statements in Besiktas District Advisory Council of AK Party, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis stated that he hoped the events in Egypt would be lessons for opposition parties rather than raising misconceptions.
Reminding that the main opposition party called the public to organize similar demonstrations in Turkey as in Egypt, Bagis said:
"We hope that the events in Egypt will be lessons for the main opposition party rather than raising misconceptions. As the Egyptian people have preferred to sledge hammer on oppressive and totalitarian regimes, we hope that the opposition party will prefer to understand the meaning of democratization, transparency and accountability in its own country. We hope the opposition tries to understand that the governments which are unfamiliar with their people and which look down on their people have nowhere to go in Turkey".
Indicating that in democratic regimes, both the penalties and the awards are determined in the elections, Bagis said:
"This nation has always been fair. If we, as AK Party, drifted away from the public, were preoccupied with our own troubles instead of the nation's problems, chose to fill our pockets, caused scandals like ISKI as they did once, brought Istanbul back to the old days when the gas masks were distributed by the newspapers and caused Turkey to experience traffic jams, air pollution, lack of water supply and the queues again, this nation would immediately punish us. Why is AK Party still in power and why is it by far the first party in all surveys? Because we get worried about this Nation's problems and try to find solutions".
