MENTAL WALLS WILL FALL

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis said the European integration, for which the fall of Berlin Wall was a historic milestone, should continue with Turkey's accession.

In the message Bagis issued for the 21st anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, Bagis said "Today is the 21st anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall which separated not only a country but the whole world. This proved once more that barriers cannot be built before human freedom."

Bagis stated that with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Eastern bloc, the European Union, 'the most important peace project of the history', expanded to the east. And that East Germany with a population of 16 million, despite all its concerns and worries, reunified with the West within a night. Bagis also added that the time passed, justified the leaders paving the way for this reunification.

In his message Bagis also stated:

"European integration, for which the fall of Berlin Wall was a historic milestone, should definitely continue with Turkey's accession. Turkey's membership will mean the fall of mental walls of Europe. This will be realized with the contribution to the future of Europe of the brave leaders with a vision like our Prime Minister Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan. We wish that historical responsibility and common sense will prevail in Europe. History proves that Europe needs new bridges not walls. We do not want a new Berlin Wall in our borders with Europe."

Bagis noted: "History proved that even such a wall was built, it would fall in the end." Bagis also emphasised that the European Union without Turkey would not be complete.
