Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister

Since November 4, 2002, I have been serving as the prime minister's foreign policy advisor, his principal liaison to foreign contacts. I have also been trying to contribute to our country's foreign relations agenda by attending the prime minister's receptions of foreign guests.

Over the course of these meetings and trips, which are significantly in our nation's interests, I have contributed my knowledge and experience also by serving as interpreter at the prime minister's meetings with foreign presidents and prime ministers. I have tried to pass on the prime minister's messages clearly and accurately to the international public and to official and personal associates.

These trips and contacts play an important role in EU membership initiatives as well as strengthen dialogue with presidents and prime ministers. These contacts and trips have afforded me a chance to personally witness the prime minister's impressive manner and speeches. This has, thanks to the prime minister, provided me with some very valuable experience—experience that will guide the performance of my duties in the service of my country for years to come.

As a member of the prime minister's foreign affairs team, I have been present at discussions of political, social, cultural and diplomatic issues. Thus, I have had the opportunity to exchange views with associates all over the world.

I also help to determine the contexts of, as well as plan and prepare for, meetings with the prime minister's visitors.

The subjects upon which views have been exchanged include: evaluating bilateral political relations, increasing partnership in cultural matters, speeding up the EU membership process (which is most important modernization project since the founding of the Republic) and global and regional issues such as NATO, Iraq and the Middle East peace process.

I have attended to forums, summits and academic meetings with the prime minister.

My efforts as the foreign policy advisor to the prime minister are summarized in the 2002-2004 Progress Report and 2005 Progress Report.

Aiming to serve his country, Bagis continues as a minister to adopt the principles of "Strength in Unity" and "Unity in Tolerance" as the basis of all his endeavors.

He was first elected to Parliament in 2002 as a deputy of Istanbul. He was appointed as Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator on January 2009 and has been working for full membership negotiations of Turkey since then...
