22. Term NATO-PA Transatlantic Sub-Committee Chairman
With my committee member colleagues, I attend joint committee, political committee and General Assembly meetings in various countries of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly that acts as NATO Assembly, with the attendance of NATO member country parliamentarians, as a representative of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and our country.
The NATO Assembly studies all important current issues such as Politics, Defense & Security, Science & Technology, and the Civil Dimension of Defense and meets regularly throughout the year. The assembly plays an indirect but important role on NATO policy making.
By joining at a time of NATO interest in non-European issues, we have demonstrated the geographical importance of our country and its important role in promoting harmony among civilizations, thereby ensuring that Turkey's voice will be heard on this platform as well.
In June 2004, in addition to 28 NATO member countries, the presidents and prime ministers of 48 countries of the Europe-Atlantic zone participated in the NATO summit in Istanbul. We are proud and honored that beautiful Istanbul was able to successfully host this historic summit. In the summit meetings, our basic expectations on various issues were largely met, and our national interests were advanced. Gathering the world leaders in Istanbul publicized Istanbul and Turkey to the world once again. I continued the NATO-PA Transatlantic Sub-Committee Chairman duty till 2006.
